Quest
for Authentic Manhood - Frequently Asked Questions
How would you summarize QAM?
It is a biblically
based curriculum that helps men understand “Why they are the way
they are” and it provides a challenging model of authentic
manhood. Further, it provides life changing direction to achieve
that manhood and concepts men can teach their sons or grandsons to
train them up to be the man God desires.
I am a young man, how can QAM help me?
Many young men today grow up without their father in
the home or without a close relationship with their father figure.
Often, the missing relationship causes emotional issues. Further,
because masculinity is bestowed by masculinity, many young men did
not get a good model of authentic manhood. QAM helps men recognize
there issues, deal with them and it provides a challenging model of
authentic manhood.
I am a senior adult, does QAM have any value for me?
Some senior men are frustrated because they have a
poor relationship with their adult children or their children are
experiencing major problems in life. Men sense some responsibility
for these issues, but don’t understand what went wrong, nor what
they can do to rectify the situations. QAM gives men insight and
direction on these issues. In addition, senior men sense value in
life as they share life lessons with younger men in small groups.
“I am too passive”…. “I can’t keep
commitments”…. “I have an anger problem”.. These
statements characterize many men. Does QAM help with specific
issues?
Yes, QAM will give men very clear insight into “why
they are the way they are.” In addition, it provides some
specific direction to overcome the issues.
I know some things I need to change in my life, but I
have trouble keeping my commitments. Can QAM help me follow
through?
Very few men will change their lives unless they
share their commitment with another man. In QAM, men have the
opportunity to share life experiences in small group discussions.
Men enjoy these sessions and get both motivation and encouragement
to follow through on commitments.
Let’s face it. Men aren’t naturally good at relationships…. with
wives, children or other men. Can QAM help me be more relational?
In Semester 2 we will deal with relational skills
with particular emphasis on becoming better husbands and fathers. In
spite of what we think, being a more relational man is a choice we
make. We just need to understand some behavior choices that develop
relationships.
Frankly, I am uncomfortable at church. Does QAM
address my problem?
Every aspect of QAM is designed to make men
comfortable. The environment is informal and man-friendly. Make
no mistake, presentations are soundly based on scripture, but the
teaching content and style is very practical, does not condemn nor
intimidate men and appeals to men of all denominations. Key points
are often illustrated by movie clips, stories, quotations, etc. that
men relate to easily. Small group participation is optional. Some
men must leave early to get to work.
I cannot attend every Wednesday morning. Is there any
value in coming occasionally?
Each weekly
study is a complete lesson with specific objectives. So a man who
drops in occasionally will benefit. But, the curriculum
follows a logical sequence to achieve QAM’s overall objectives, so
frequent attendance provides greater value. Few men can make every
session, so completed listening guides, as well as CD’s are
available on a loan basis to make up missed sessions.
Alternatively, men can make up a session by attending a video
session on Sunday evening.
The Purpose of
MOVIA (Men of Vision in Action)
Men strive for
significance and fulfillment in life. But, for many, life is a "time
of quiet desperation"…Thoreau, or a life of "aimless meandering" …
Warren.
Men often become self-absorbed. For some, self-absorption is
"passivity". For others it's expressed in numerous activities that
provide an escape and lifts their esteem. Many live for the escapes,
but life is an unfulfilling tread mill of activity.
Jesus came to
provide "abundant lives" and established the church to help men come
to know him and find such lives. But, when men look to the church for
help, they are often disappointed. Many are uneasy in church
environments or cannot relate biblical teaching to their problems.
Many never connect with another Christian man for guidance and
support. Church becomes "religion", viewed as a set of rules and
condemning people. Many are turned off. They find no abundant,
life-giving significance.
MOVIA exists to
help men come to know a real and personal God that reveals their
purposes, provides personal direction and empowers them to achieve the
life-giving, authentic manhood seen in Jesus Christ.
